I have been composing works for students for eight years through the Creativity: Learning through Experience program with The Music Settlement. It is important to me that young musicians receive quality music written specifically for them with their talents in mind while presenting some challenges so that they can learn new techniques and skills.
Before composing the work, I assess the player’s technical abilities and personality traits. I then take a few weeks to create music that fits the requested length, instrumentation, and skill level. I offer coaching and feedback during the student’s lessons with their regular music instructor.
Examples of past commissions performed by students ages 10 to 18 are linked below. All of these pieces were written especially for them a few months before the public recital.
