Twilight to Sunrise

This piano duet invokes the colors that transition in the sky from twilight to sunrise. Pianistic elements include fast repeated figures, a palette of volume from ppp to fff, and keeping the sustain pedal down the entire piece.

The graphic notation portion takes actual flight patterns of a hawk using thermal lift to gain altitude.  Graphic notation allows the performer to play freely, without having to count out beats or play specific notes.

In the E Major section, the sun illuminates the sky and sits just under the horizon. The sky has a soft, up lit glow. The Db Major section signifies the sun finally breaking over the horizon (in measure 84).

When the sun rises, a bird can be seen flying around, doing loops in the air. After this display, the piece ends with the sun stretching out in all directions of the sky.
