I started with the idea of this student’s (age 13) favorite sport, hockey. It has constant motion and players make arcs and swirls on the ice. This led me to compose music that is in perpetual motion (constant 8th notes).
When I begin to conceptualize music I want to write, I start by shaping the audiences’ reaction. Do I want a calm, graceful piece with a warm, grateful applause? Do I want a loud, crazy piece with amused, cheering applause? For this music, I want a “WOW!” reaction from listeners that would bring them to their feet.
